"Naval Battles and Heroes" is one of many volumes in the American Heritage Junior Library. This book is an overview of the US Navy's greatest leaders, their ships, and the battles they fought. Some of these notable leaders include John Paul Jones, Oliver Hazard Perry, Stephen Decatur, David Farragut, George Dewey, and Raymond Sprunace.
The book opens with the American Revolution and concludes with World War II. The chapter describing "Heroes of the Blue and Gray" was especially informative and well-written. In the conclusion, author Wilbur Cross points out that, during the Pacific campaign in World War II, the submarine emerged as the most effective single type of ship in the entire US fleet; from December 1941 until August 1945, American submarines sank more tonnage than all other naval and air units combined.
As with other books in this series "Naval Battles and Heroes" is illustrated with numerous paintings, prints, and photographs of the period. Ideal for middle/high school students or anyone seeking a good, basic introduction to American naval history.
