The first of MGM's phenomenally profitable Jeanette MacDonald-Nelson Eddy musicals, Naughty Marietta takes several beneficial liberties with the libretto of the original Victor Herbert operetta. MacDonald plays an 18th-century French princess who escapes an arranged marriage by posing as a "cake girl," a mail-order bride sent to the New World to marry a colonist. En route, MacDonald and the other brides are captured by pirates, but are rescued by mercenary Eddy and his roistering companions. To avoid marrying some lowly farmer or frontiersman, simon-pure MacDonald intimates that she is a woman with a "history," which makes her attractive to the glitterati of old New Orleans. Only Eddy sees through MacDonald's feigned "naughtiness," and in the end claims her for his own. The most memorable of the Herbert songs retained for the film version of Naughty Marietta was "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life", which remained one of Jeanette MacDonald's signature tunes ever afterward. Wonderful movie!!
I first saw this movie with my mother about 15yrs. ago. If you love opera and movies you will absoluetly LOVE this movie. Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy are perfectly cast in this as they make you feel that they are truely in love for real! A young french princess (MacDonald) flees her uncle who is trying to marry her off to an old nobleman she doesnt love. She flees to the Americas where she falls in love with a soldier(Eddy) and has to escape when her uncle comes looking for her. There's enough comedy and romance to make you laugh and fall in love with them yourself!!

Stars Shine In This Musical
This was the first of Nelson Eddy/Jeannete McDonald films that I had seen and enjoyed every minute of it. The songs are beautiful to hear and are well done. This movie has everything from a lovable puppy to songbirds, a puppet show featuring Jeannette, pirates taking women for their wives, the hero (Nelson Eddy), who is in love with Jeannette, and more. Highlights of the movie are Jeannette and Nelson in a canoe and he sings to her with his rich tenor voice, and at the end of the movie Jeannette and Nelson sing to each other with heartfelt emotion. The movie also has comedy. It is a very heartwarming film from start to finish and is a must see, if you like old musicals. It is a movie that you will want to watch many times. I rate it a 5 star classic.
