Excerpt from Nashville Journal of Medicine and Surgery, Vol. 108: March, 1914 Listerine is an efficient, non-toxic antiseptic of accurately deter mined and uniform antiseptic power, prepared in a form convenient for immediate use. Composed of volatile and non-volatile substances, Listerine 'is a balsamic antiseptic, refreshing in its application, lasting in its effect. It is a saturated solution of boric acid, reinforced by the antiseptic properties of ozoniferous oils. After the volatile constituents have evaporated, a film of boric acid remains evenly distributed upon the surfaces to which Listerine has been applied. There is no possibility of poisonous effect through the absorption of Listerine. Listerine is unirritating, even when applied to the most delicate tis sues; in its full strength it does not coagulate serous albumen. For those purposes wherein a poisonous or corrosive disinfectant can not be safely employed, Listerine is the most acceptable antiseptic for a physician's prescription. Listerine is particularly useful in the treatment of abnormal eon tions of the mucosa, and admirably suited for a wash, gargle or douche in catarrhal conditions of the nose and throat.
