While his servant was washing him, who should appear but Dingan, Popa, Mothlankane, and Mokubane, all four armed with assagais. While they were yet at a considerable distance, the king cried to them, in great trepidation, --Where are you going 1--To the hunt, they replied. But why do you come so near to me, and all armed? Have I done you any harm?--He speaks, and tries to escape, but Popa, Mothlankane, and Mokubane thrust him through with their spears; he falls under their blows, weltering in blood. Why do you kill me, my brothers? he asks, groaning.--Dingan answered, --It is because thou hast murdered thy mother! Quick! speak in your own defence. Thou art a treacherous sorcerer!--"I repent for ever--you have corrected me--let me alone now!"--"Barbarian, leave thee!--Thou wouldst slay us all!--implacable Chaka--thou skilful impostor--thou stern inkhosi!--Thou preventest the marriage of everybody but of thyself--thou dost not allow us a 152 ASSASSINATION" OF CHAKA. moment of rest.--Dost thou not cause thy soldiers to be put to death if they but spend a few days in fine weather at home, instead of engaging incessantly in war?
