Occasional browning and foxing, mainly to the margins of the plates. As a result of his unfortunate discovery of the non-existent Croker Mountains during his first Arctic expedition in 1818, Sir John Ross had to wait until 1829 to gain private support for a second voyage in search of the Northwest Passage. With his nephew James Clark Ross as second-in-command, Ross and his party embarked in the small paddle-steamer Victory on May 23, 1829. The survivors were rescued at Prince Regent's Inlet on August 26, 1833. Despite the loss of their ship in the ice, the explorers had achieved a great deal, including the discovery of the North Magnetic Pole by James Clark Ross, the discovery and mapping of several new regions, and the demonstration of the dietary importance of fresh meat and oil on such expeditions, despite incredible hardships, only three men died on the voyage. An important Arctic journey cont. a lot about the Eskimos, their habits, clothing, language and numerous observations on natural history, geology and meteorology.
