Yet there is one point which has not been fully elucidated - the history of the diplomatic relations between the Emperor and the British Cabinet, from the violation of the Peace of Amiens in 1803 to the first abdication in 1814. In point of fact, despite a state of incessant war, correspondence was continually passing between the two Cabinets, with a view to bringing about a reconciliation either by direct or in direct means. The subject has had some few pages devoted to it by the chief historians of Napoleon, but it has been placed in the background, Since in Napoleon's career all other interests are subordinate in importance to military history.
