For some reason, American reggae bands always seem to leave something to be desired. Sometimes they try too hard -- putting on fake Jamaican accents, torturing their straight Caucasian hair into ersatz dreadlocks -- and sometimes they don't try hard enough, haphazardly throwing together all the necessary musical elements of the genre without getting the spirit of the music across. Too often, American reggae just sounds like pop music with an inside-out drumbeat. But this debut recording by the Ark Band, a fine young reggae group from Columbus, Ohio, is a happy exception to that rule. It mines a rich vein of roots reggae in the tradition of Third World and Aswad, back before those two bands succumbed to the commercial blandishments of Babylon. The Ark Band delivers the social commentary one would expect (typified by the title track), as well as some Rastafarian declamations ("Oh Jah," "The Lord Is My Light"), and the mix is leavened by a few lover's-rock moves ("Roses," "Ring on Your Finger"). The band's sound is clear and well-produced, but not slick or oversynthesized; lead vocal chores are shared among the band members and are consistently good. This isn't a groundbreaking album, but it's a solid contribution and well worth looking for. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi
