Seller's Description:
24mo. Limp full green leatherette with gilt spine lettering. 630pp. All edges gilt. Two sewn-in green (one light, one dark) satin page markers. Fine. Pristine first of this edition, an abridged and simplified version of the 13th century Italian theologian's magnum, the Summa Theologica, a vast compilation of the Catholic Church's main teachings left unfinished at St. Thomas's death in 1274. This special copy bears a fine nonauthorial presentation inscription on inner flyleaf: "To Adlai Stevenson, / To whom I am sure / St Thomas is no / stranger. / Wishing you and / your loved ones / Gods Choicest / Blessings / Sincerely / Bill Carroll / 642 Beverly Blvd / Upper Darby / Ga." Carroll's identity remains vague, but clearly this was sent to the Illinois governor (1900-65) after he became the Democratic presidential candidate, a role he would reprise (same result) in 1956.
This is definitely an essential book for every human being seeking to know, love and serve God better and thereby attain happiness. The book is based on the extraordinary "Summa Theologica," the teological/philosophical masterpiece of the great Saint Thomas Aquinas, universally acclaimed as the Prince of Theologians. Saint Thomas' Summa deals with every worthwhile truth from a to z, from the attributes of God to the zeal of man. As its name signifies, The Summa Theologica is the sum total of all theological knowledge, a vast synthesis in whichis unfolded all that can be known of God and man. It is divided into three parts which deal with God, man and the God-man. It comprises 38 tracts, 631 questions, almost 3,000 articles, 10,000 objections and their answers. All this treasury of wisdom and knowledge about God, Christ and man is distilled and made easily understandable for everyone in "My way of life." Essentially, the book places the Summa of St. Thomas into the hands of the common gentleman and lady. This book is beautifully and concisely written for both the learned and the beginner and as such will please everyone who reads and consults it regularly. It is recommended for fathers, mothers, high school and college students, converts to the Catholic faith, and just about everyone who seeks the interior peace and serenity that can come only from knowing and practicing the universal truths taught and honored by the Church founded by Jesus Christ Himself in the person of Saint Peter, the first pope. This book, along with the wonderful "Imitation of Christ" by Thomas a Kempis, certainly belongs in any list of the top ten most important books a person should read.
