Much of the album was recorded in New Orleans with a wonderful studio band, featuring drummer Herman Ernest and guitarists John Mooney and Wayne Bennett; among the highlights of these sessions are a pair of duets with Irma Thomas. A handful of cuts were made in Oakland, with Pee Wee Ellis leading a horn section.
