It grows and flowers freely in any common garden soil which is open to the sun and yet sheltered from high winds, and it remains a long time in perfection without its beautiful pink and white flowers looking at all faded. 8. The Rose.--The Rose is generally called the Queen of Flowers, and certainly the common Provence rose cannot be surpassed for either beauty or sweetness. The tea-scented roses, which are generally of very pale tints of yellow or pink, or nearly white, are also delightfully fragrant; though their odour is quite different from that of the common rose, and they have the disadvantage of being much more tender. All roses require a rich soil, and they should have either manure laid round the roots every autumn, or should be watered with soapy water or something of that kind, to supply them with abundance of food. Hoses are most easily propagated by budding, of the mode of performing which operation full details will be given in the nest chapter. 9. The Mabtagon Lily.--This is a tall hardy plant, very common in flower gardens, which requires no particular care; as, after the bulb is once planted, it will continue to send up fresh shoots every summer. There are several other lilies, that are of easy culture, with very showy flowers, and may be grown in borders, though they are generally too large for the beds of a small garden. The best of these are the common-White Lily, the large Orange Lily, and the Japan Lilies, which last are most magnificent plants: they were formerly kept in a greenhouse, but they are now found to flower perfectly well in the open air in the neighbourhood of London.
