Thus, when director/choreographer Tommy Tune, looking for a theatrical vehicle to reunite him with Twiggy, with whom he appeared in Ken Russell's 1971 film adaptation of the faux-'20s musical The Boy Friend , hit upon the Gershwin brothers' 1927 show Funny Face , he did not hesitate to have it heavily revised, ultimately getting Peter Stone to write an entirely new book and bringing in numerous interpolations from other Gershwin shows and movies. By the time they got to Broadway on May 1, 1983, they had even changed the title to My One and Only , so the resulting entity is really a new project that happens to retain a handful of the songs from Funny Face. (Those are, in addition to "Funny Face" and "My One and Only," "He Loves and She Loves," and "'S Wonderful," as well as "High Hat," which, though performed on-stage, somehow didn't make it to this cast album.) As heard here, then, the music is basically a Gershwin sampler, as performed largely by Tune (leaning heavily on his Texas accent) and Twiggy (singing in a rather mannered British croon), with added appearances by Charles "Honi" Coles and Roscoe Lee Browne. On-stage, My One and Only is a dance-oriented show, and that can't be re-created on disc. But the singers give lively performances of some well-known Gershwin songs. (When reissue producer Didier C. Deutsch came to prepare a CD reissue in 1989, he found a reprise of "My One and Only" preceded by the show's climactic dialogue scene and inserted it as a bonus track.
