Excerpt from My Life and Experiences Among Our Hostile Indians: A Record of Personal Observations, Adventures, and Campaigns Among The thanks of the publishers are due to all who have in any way helped them to produce these illustrations, and especially to government officials, to whose uniform courtesy they are indebted for the use of instruments and privileges in photographing and painting objects for the colored plates. Without their efficient aid it would not have been possible to have produced them. They would also mention the late Cap tain John G. Bourke, U. S. A., a brave and experienced In dian fighter, who during his fatal illness sent permission to the publishers to use the necklace of human fingers, a fac simile of which appears in this volume. Captain Bourke himself captured this necklace from the Indians, and the story of its capture and of the significance of this gruesome object of Indian barbarity is told in his own words. They would also mention Mr. James Mooney, who for many years lived among the Indians as one of them, and who has con tributed to the government collection many unique articles of Indian ornaments, dress, and equipment; he kindly loaned the original Indian drawings from which the illustrations were made that accompany his translation of the unique story of the Giant Sinti. Taken as a whole, these illustrations portray Indian life and scenes with fidelity to nature. Some of the portraits of noted Indian warriors were photographed many years ago in their absolutely wild state amid their native surroundings.
