Colin describes this collection as his walk through life, thus far, and what a pleasure it is to join him, thus far. Reading these poems we share in experience from his start as a Guiseley lad, through dramas in his life and in 21st century Britain, to his observations as both a local historian and a lover of the natural world. We are permitted to join this self-effacing and sensitive man when his defences are down and he clearly needs to exorcise his innermost thoughts and doubts and frustrations. But turn the page, the mood changes and his quirky humour re-surfaces. His footnotes are an invaluable eye-opener when he gives his reasons for writing a particular poem, the background or location, source of inspiration, and examples of his very own stanza rhyming - as in the Ochre Chase. What an intriguing tale he tells of boyhood mischief in Yorkshire, unscrewing the nose cones off stored bombs on a pram factory cricket field, of all places, in confessions of a Twelve year Old Traitor! And how moving in Builded Here, an epitaph to the industrial Revolution and past lives in the West Riding. The black humour is sharp in Beachy Head - with the ghost who only needed one shoe. He expresses a view about high-profile victim Dr David Kelly, the casualties of war, and rejects of society. His sense of fun and his wonder of nature is brilliantly evoked in the slow worm's 'Slow striptease' Rooks flirting' 'abseiling spiders' worried curlews' and storm cocks busking at the heavens'.
