I can tell you a thing or two from both sides of the struggle. I assure you no one has happily been walking through life and decides it would be a good idea to stick a needle in their arm. Anyone who is piggy backing that monkey has a story to tell. I have survived as an HSP, Highly Sensitive Person, misdiagnosed as bipolar all my life. I was medicated at the age twelve and became a walking zombie. It's much easier for society to simply give you pills then actually figure out the route of the problem and come up with a real solution. Those who are emotionally disturbed or simply don't fit in the box often turn to self medicating. I was truly blessed by the gift of Grace and had an immense spiritual awakening.
