Jarvis Cocker held his BBC 6Music Sunday Service for the better part of seven years, airing a show every Sunday afternoon between 2010 and 2017. This Ace compilation arrived in 2019, two years after Cocker brought the program to its close, and it serves as a memorial of what he achieved with his stylized, idiosyncratic show. In his thorough, witty liner notes, the former Pulp leader explains "the show was intended to help people relax and enjoy a little quiet contemplation on a Sunday afternoon. Therefore, most of the selections are 'Low energy.' Mellow, even." While this assessment is accurate, it's also true that the 23 selections on Music from Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service aren't designed for passive listening. All of the cuts are indeed laid-back, but they often grab the listener's attention: it's not background music. Sometimes, that means a voice can leap out of the speakers -- as it does with Antony & the Johnsons melodramatic reading of Beyonce's "Crazy in Love" -- but it can also mean that a bit of skeletal folk commands attention. As with the radio show, much of the appeal of this compilation lies in its context and juxtaposition, and Cocker replicates some of the accidental magic of his broadcast by including an improvised collaboration of his with David Cunningham of the Flying Lizards, along with a Christopher Hitchens speech overdubbed on the Phoenix Foundation's "Corale." The end result is a lovely little memento for fans of the show, which also provides a transportive bit of meditative listening for those who never managed to join in a Sunday Service. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
