The album presents music that might have been heard in York Minster, the city's impressive cathedral, during that period, as well as some secular works that, one assumes, could have been sung in the general vicinity. Not all the music directly relates to the events of the day, but the styles pertain to the history of which they were a part, and the program hangs together well. For example, the singing of psalms by congregations was a harbinger of new democratic trends in the air, and several of them are included here.
