Johanna Johnston has written the definitive book about the first woman candidate for President of the United States. Victoria Woodhull's amazing rise from poverty to wealth is extraordinary. Her family history is both sad and hilarious. She and Hillary Clinton have amazing similarities. Victoria had to found the Equal Rights Party in order to have party endorsement for President and her fight with Susan B. Anthony will have me laughing forever. These women were interesting and there is not a dull page in the entire book. Of all the books about Victoria Woodhull, this is the most complete and interesting . Although she did not win many votes and suffered persecution, it is uplifting to learn how she and her sister, Tennessee, ended their lives as wives of men of wealth and nobility. Victoria Woodhull was intelligent, beautiful and resourceful. This book is very well researched and provides an excellent picture of the US during the 1800's. Not to be missed if you like Women's History.

an amazing tale
Victoria Woodhull was a remarkable woman who lived an amazing life. This is an old biography and so has some shortcomings, such as very inadequate documentation of where the information came from. That makes it hard to know what is true & what is more fictional. However, Sachs lived when it was possible to interview people who knew Victoria and her family & so has information that, if correct, is very valuable now. I'd balance this with one of the more modern biographies to get at the Truth, but it is a good read.
