Seller's Description:
Very Good. 1905 hardcover (cloth covered, apparently handmade), reprinted eight months after the first edition during the same year. 20 pages (some blank, and several black & white plates along with text). Size: About 3½-inches wide x 6-inches high. Frontispiece of Park Row. Condition: Some wear, light age darkening, else overall Very Good. Text is very readable, plates of buildings ("sky scrapers") and street scenes are clear and vivid. This is the story and etchings of a noted artist of his time, Joseph Pennell, who was 45-years-old at the time of this publication. The etchings of Pennell are "instinct with the quality...with crispness in their execution and a lightness and gaiety in their arrangement as pictures." He has been called "the ablest painter-etcher now living and working." Etchings include the Trinity Building, the Four-Story House, the Stock Exchange, the Bank of Metropolis, the Times Building, the buildings at 42nd St. and Lower Broadway. Pennell served as Chairman of the Jury on Illustration and Engraving at the invitation of the authorities at the St. Louis Exposition. He lived in New York City for a brief period.
