The best is saved for last, in the form of the Serenade for winds in C minor, K. 388. This is not a solo bassoon work; the bassoon has a few prominent numbers, but it is a work for wind ensemble. No matter, though, as the contrasts brought out by the period winds (it would have been nice to have some indication of exactly what instruments were being played) generate an extraordinary performance. The second movement, beginning with instruments in the higher ranges, brings a sense of real relief from the dark first movement, only to be displaced by the rhythmically spiky minuet. The variation-set finale showcases all of the considerable color of Mozart's writing here.
