Despite numerous recording quirks that can try a listener's patience, this album of Mozart's Piano Quartets K. 478 and K. 493 is fairly enjoyable for its fresh interpretations and remarkable period timbres. The extremely reverberant acoustics of the church of Maria Minor, Utrecht, apparently complicated matters for the engineers; the sound shifts frequently, sometimes suggesting a remote placement of the fortepiano and close proximity of the strings, or vice versa; and the balance is audibly manipulated. These irregularities may cause some to reject this disc as unlistenable, but it is possible to adjust to them and appreciate the performances, which are intelligent and lively. Bart van Oort's playing on the fortepiano is tasteful and usually discreet, though his energy rises a bit unexpectedly in his sixteenth-note runs.
