On this disc, he begins his series on the keyboard music of Mozart, using the notes here not only to talk about the music, but also the three different instruments he chose for playing it. Given all that research, however, his playing is far from studious. There is something in his way of playing, no matter what instrument, that speaks to the earthier nature of Mozart's music. Part of it is that Rampe uses a forceful, heavy finger action. Because of this, in the Fantasia, K. 475, and Sonata in C minor, K. 457, played on a fortepiano, the drama of the music comes out and foreshadows that of Beethoven. His playing also causes the keyboard action of the clavichord, used for the smaller works on this disc, to be as loud as the music at times.
