This may well have been exactly the way Mozart and Beethoven heard their quintets for piano and winds in the latter days of the eighteenth century, but for many, if not most, early twenty first century listeners, the sound of the period instruments will require some getting used to. The unwary listener may be shocked by the sound of the period instruments played by woodwind quartet Il Gardellino with fortepianist Jan Vermeulen. The oboe is lean and piercing, the clarinet warm and juicy, the horn hard and brassy, the bassoon rich and fruity, and the fortepiano is stiff and slightly clangorous, particularly in forte passages. The playing is uniformly first-class, both individually and as an ensemble, with Il Gardellino's tight but relaxed performance admirably supporting and inspiring Vermeulen's sharp yet soulful keyboard playing.
