The errors I shall regret and hope they may not be too numerous, but with the omissions I am in no way concerned. I do not attempt to provide a complete or balanced survey of our knowledge of the British Lepidoptera, or of those aspects of science which they have been used to illuminate. I have intentionally picked merely upon a selection of them likely to interest some of those who love the country side and study or only collect these insects. They may perhaps find added enjoym ent by discovering that they can carry out useful research within the limits of their own hobby.
