The character ''Father Boone'' is based on the author, the Catholic priest Rev. Martin J. Scott, S.J. (1866-1954). He was the author of more than twenty books dealing with the Catholic faith, including catechetical works, novels, and a biography. He was a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross ('87) in Worcester, Massachusetts, and spent most of his career at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola on Park Avenue, New York, and at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Boston.
