It is the year 4022; all of the ancient country of Usa has been buried under many feet of detritus from a catastrophe that occurred back in 1985. Imagine, then, the excitement that Howard Carson, an amateur archeologist at best, experienced when in crossing the perimeter of an abandoned excavation site he felt the ground give way beneath him and found himself at the bottom of a shaft, which, judging from the DO NOT DISTURB sign hanging from an archaic doorknob, was clearly the entrance to a still-sealed burial chamber. ...

Carson's incredible discoveries, including the remains of two bodies, one of then on a ceremonial bed facing an altar that appeared to be a means of communicating with the Gods and the other lying in a porcelain sarcophagus in the Inner Chamber, permitted him to piece together the whole fabric of that extraordinary civilization.

Seller's Description:
David Macaulay B&W illustrations. New. No Jacket Issued. Book CONDITION: NEW 1979 Houghton Mifflin large paperback, first edition, 26th printing (c. 1990? ). B&W illustrations by Macaulay. CONTENT: First of all, this is NOT a book for children! ! ! This is a satire on the state of archaeology/anthropology. And it is hilarious. There is an old adage about archaeology that if you don't know what the artifact is, just say it is of a spiritual/religious nature. That is in full bloom here. I love this book. Wikipedia says: "Motel of the Mysteries, written in 1979 after the 1976-1979 exhibition of the Tutankhamun relics in the U.S., concerns the discovery by future archaeologists of an American motel and their ingenious interpretation of the building and its contents as a funerary and temple complex." Great Find
Just as much fun as I remembered it to be. This was written in the 1980's in the style fo finding Tut's Tomb. Imagine being decades away from the 1985 disaster that coated the USA in dirt and sand then excavating a Motel and all it's artifacts.
