Madacy Entertainment's Ultimate Summer Rock isn't everything its title suggests; however, it is an entertaining collection of well-known pop songs from the 1960s, '70s, and '80s. The producers represent the "summer" portion of the title correctly, balancing lighthearted 1970s fare like "Sugar Magnolia" from the Grateful Dead and the Doobie Brothers' "Listen to the Music" with goofy, florescent 1980s pap like David Lee Roth's "California Girls" and the heavy-handed beats of C+C Music Factory's "Gonna Make You Sweat" that'll even get old Uncle Ned to shake his tail feather poolside. Unlike most compilations of this sort, Ultimate Summer Rock isn't bogged down with stinkers. It does, however, start with one in the Glenn Frey throwaway "The Heat Is On." But soon greener pastures prevail, with Los Lobos' rollicking cover of "La Bamba" and a true gem in the Guess Who's "Follow Your Daughter Home." There's even a nice reggae-tinged set toward the end of the collection featuring Blondie's "Tide Is High" and the cheery Jimmy Cliff number "Wonderful World, Beautiful People."
