This may seem surpris- ing to the uninitiated, but those who have made baskets will understand it. Basketry has proved itself. In schools and social settlements one notes the contrast between the beginners mats and baskets, loosely woven and crude in form, and the graceful forms a, nd solid weaving of experienced young craftsmen. 4 well-made basket shows more than dexterity and skill it stands for patience and stick-to-it -iveness, and has the value of all good work. Best of all, children love the craft and would rather weave baskets or wander afield in search of natural material for weaving or dyes than do anything else you can suggest. To grown people basketry is a boon. It is unusual to find a craft so simple as to require no tools or para- phernalia, so fascinating that it never palls. Those who have tested t, lle value and charm of basketry, the many friends who have learned with me how to make baskets, will, I trust, be as glad to receive as I am to send them a few more baskets.
