Seller's Description:
4to. [4], iv, 280 pp. Extra-illustrated title, steel-engraved borders, and illustrations throughout. Original full blue-green morocco Victorian publisher's binding, decorative gilt borders, rasied bands and gilt spine, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. (minor rubbing to front hinge, minor wear to corners, slight bumping to lower fore-edge of rear cover), still a VG bright copy. Revised edition, with the famed illustrations by Daniel MacLise (1806-1870) which not only incorporated influences from German illustrators of the 1830s and early 1840s, but also anticipated the French Art Nouveau movement. These poems were commissioned to be set to music by the Irish composer Sir John Stevenson (1761-1833), and the series ran from 1808 to 1834, and proved tremendously popular. This edition offers a fine example of a Victorian publisher binding. See Ray, The illustrator and the book in England, 29.
