Moondreams is the second of two superb albums that Haymes cut for Capitol Records in the mid-'50s and it's the single finest work in his vast catalog. A collection of dark torch songs and gently swinging ballads, the album features Haymes' beautiful, relaxed, but deeply nuanced vocals and richly atmospheric small-group jazz, with string arrangements by Johnny Mandel and Ian Bernard, both of whom were associated with the West Coast cool jazz scene of the time.
