Sometimes when an acoustic outfit decides to plug in, things don't work out so well. Other times, it's so clear that the band doesn't care what kind of instruments they have that the music is as infectious as ever. The Rugburns fit neatly into the second category, and their skewered tales of even more ridiculous topics work out very nicely on this amped-up EP. Taking on topics like the tooth fairy and lockjaw with a sloppy electric approach à la the Replacements, the band fumbles through some great tracks that are as catchy as they are stupid. The band's country-fried sentimentality is still intact, and it only makes for a better edge on their jangly pop songs. The undoubted centerpiece of this short record is the twisted tale "Dick's Automotive," with the unforgettable chorus of its title and lyrics that tell the tale of kidnapping, Henry Rollins, auto repair, deer on acid, and welding. Clocking in at over eight minutes, the track is not nearly as disturbing as it is hilarious, and the Rugburns prove to have a great ability to incorporate wild storytelling into their music. A slightly unnecessary rendition of the "Sesame Street Theme" closes out the record, but it really doesn't matter, because in the tracks that precede it, the band claims their position as the unknown but still deserving heroes of funny rock & roll. ~ Peter J.
