King Harald Fairhair is dying. Who will rule in his stead? Viking Age Norway's greatest king, Harald Fairhair, has unified the northern districts into a kingdom, but as he ages and weakens, so does his realm. To keep the kingdom from fracturing, Harald abdicates his High Seat to the one son he believes capable and vicious enough: Erik Bloodaxe. But there is one problem: the other sons hate their brother, and will not accept his kingship. This leads to an unavoidable confrontation on a rain-soaked hill known as Mollebakken; a hill that will decide who will rule, and who will die. Praise: ★★★★★ - "After having read the three excellent novels in the Hakon Saga, I was excited to find out that there was a novella telling the story before the story and from Erik's perspective. Schumacher's writing in this novella is tight and his pacing excellent. I read from start to finish without putting it down and was thoroughly engaged throughout the entire story." ★★★★★ - "A truly thoughtful depiction of Viking Age Scandinavia. Erik's wife plays a surprisingly large part, her foresight treated as a normal skill rather than something otherworldly. Their children may be mentioned more than seen, but the context gives both backstory and depth to the tale, making this a true Historical rather than a slash 'n' gore story. Highly recommended as a standalone, or as entry to the series."
