Although it suffers from some of the same problems as its predecessor, Modern Rock 1987: Hang the DJ is a much stronger volume than the 1986 disc. Primarily, it benefits from the lack of crossover hits. Many of these songs -- most notably R.E.M.'s "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" -- have become radio hits in the years since their release, but all of the cuts here intially were played on college radio.
