This anthology reflects the upsurge in Arab poetry since 1947. While the great New York poets, such as Ameen Rihani and Gibran Khalil Gibran, wrote about their experience of being aliens in a foreign land, and while their immediate successors in the 1930s and 1940s produced poems of self-indulgent escapism, the contemporary poets in this anthology confront war, civil war, coup d'etat and the shattering events that have overtaken the Middle East since World War II. Their continuing preoccupation is a sense of isolation in their own countries. This anthology traces four major trends: the Taf'ila Movement (Iraqi School), 1947-57; the Majallat Shi'r Movement (Syrian School), 1957-67; the Huzairan (June) Experience, 1967-82; and the Beirut Experience from 1982 onwards.
