Seller's Description:
Second edition (originally published the previous year). 8vo. 354 pp. Illustrated from wood engravings. Second edition (originally published the previous year). The first half of the book records the author's experiences on and along the Mississippi from St. Louis to Arkansas; the second half deals entirely with Louisiana. Clark New South I, 103: "[The author] devoted some attention to the Ku Klux Klan, the Negro exodus, rice plantations, religious life, and the social status of women. A most valuable travel account for the area visited." Although OCLC locates many copies of the first edition, this second is found in only four copies (Illinois, Harvard, Rice, Brigham Young). Original half-cloth and marbled boards, gilt title on spine; bookplate and owner's inscription, old stain through upper margin, else a very good copy.
