Excerpt from Missionary Anecdotes: Being a Collection of Interesting Incidents Illustrative of Work and Life in the Foreign Mission Field One of the things which distinguishes the eventful century which is now drawing to a close, is the deep and wide-spread interest which has been manifested by all sections of the Christian Church in missions to the heathen, and to those who have not heard the name, or the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Home Missions have not been forgotten; they have, indeed, been largely increased, and carried on with devotion, but Foreign Missions have attracted more attention and secured more aid recently, than ever they did in the previous history of the Church. It may now be said they extend to the ends of the earth. There are few places, where man dwells, which have not been visited by the Messengers of the Cross, who have left, with a sublime devotion, their homes, kindred, and the blessings of civilisation, to make known to those who sit in darkness the blessed Gospel of the Grace of God, which makes men wise unto salvation.
