Librarian par excellence Miss Helma Zukas is a woman of many talents--and civic-minded to boot. Which is why she agrees, albeit reluctantly, to employ her long-dormant canoeing skills in the service of the Bellehaven Library relay race team in the famous Snow to Surf Race. But first she has a more pressing obligation--namely keeping her dear, somewhat flaky artist friend, Ruth Winthrop, off Death Row. Flamboyant Ruth, it seems, has rejected the advances of a dirty old man in a local bar, who later, rather inconveniently, turns up dead just outside her studio. Helma knows Ruth is no killer, even though the police consider her the prime suspect. Now, time is running out. By asking too many questions about one unsavory dead man, Miss Zukas is paddling in dangerous waters. And the carefully buried scandals her snooping is uncovering could sink the inquisitive librarian permanently.

Ihave read all the Miss Zukas, after stumbling upon them one day. Miss Zukas is a very prim and proper librarian both professionally and personally. Her struggle to keep an orderly life ( kitchen towels perfectly coordinated and "set just so" in her perfectly clean and ordered apt) her best pal the artist Ruth, brings in delightful dissarray! Helma's natural curiosity in this episode, leads her to sleuth yet another murder this time as she plays sportwoman during a canoeing race. She has an engaging and funny cast of characters invading the story line including the suspects! Alternate ongoing story lines are nicely written in to help you get to know the characters. Boy cat Zukas, the mangy stray cat who has adopted her, much to her chagrin, the flakey head Librarian Ms. Moon with her chants library funding woes and the most delightful employees to last but not least, the Sheriff, her "love interest" of sorts. Ms. Dereske, has created a likeable character, although she is not warm and fuzzy as found in many "cozy mysteries". Miss Zukas novels will not dissappoint.
