A welcome oddity in Ayumi Hamasaki's early catalog, (Miss)understood arrived in 2006 in the midst of a string of rock-inspired releases. Incorporating genres like funk, gospel, and R&B-pop, the quirky set took all the hallmarks of a typical Hamasaki album and added production -- notably from Geo of Sweetbox -- that could have been on a Destiny's Child, Gwen Stefani, or P!nk album. Take the boisterous opener "Bold & Delicious," which more than lives up to its name with its soulful backing choir, funky beat, and riotous "Yeah, yeah, yeah" gang chorus; it's one of the most invigorated and unexpected moments in Hamasaki's catalog. "Ladies Night" takes it a step forward, adding robotic breakbeats, disco blips, and a stadium-sized singalong chorus for the ages. Other standouts include the appropriately titled alt-rock blast "Alterna"; the dramatic "In the Corner," which sounds like Mary J. Blige's "Family Affair" but with strings and riffs; and the anthemic dance-pop-nostalgia moment, "Fairyland." While the highs threaten to eclipse the rest of the songs on (Miss)understood, the LP is one of her best and most underrated. ~ Neil Z. Yeung, Rovi
