The two stories included in Miss Read's Christmas are typical of her work in that you know where you are--in a small, modern-day English village--and whom you're likely to meet; you know that there will be folk wisdom, a great deal of tongue-in-cheek humor over the foibles of ordinary people, and unabashed portrayal of some of the unattractive things that people (including children--complete with dirty diapers and runny noses, because these are realistically portrayed children) say and do about each other; but you do NOT know exactly where the story is going or how it will get there. "Miss Read" writes about a setting and a community which she knows very well, and her obvious fondness for the denizens of the village, as well as the outsiders who try to fit in, is unsentimental; still her belief in the essential goodness of most people is also much in evidence. Both stories are very entertaining; the reader comes away smiling but not gagging on an excess of sweetness. I highly recommend both stories for Christmas-season reading.
