Add this to your VIP bookshelf along with "Where the Wild Things Are" and "The Little Engine that Could." This is one of those most requested types of books. Your little ones will love it!
Brightly colored pictures, just enough repetition to entice children, just the right number of words on each page for reading aloud - and the ability to let your child show you the animals, trees, cakes, pies, and all sorts of other bits of interaction to let them learn without realizing it.
A word of warning here - pay attention to the description of the book's condition. Miss Mopp's books tend to be well loved. This book is out of print and there have been no reprints (Publishers - Are you listening??) On the other hand, having so many copies of this book used and loved so much shows that children love this story. This is the kind of book that makes a child want to learn to read, so they can find other fascinating stories just like this. It's also a great book for the transition from "Read to me" to "I can read it myself."
As a librarian, I always had this book ready for an especially fidgety crowd. If I was visiting a school or another library, I brought my own copy - instant success even for the 8 and 9 year olds!
I bought a copy for my first grandchild this Christmas. As a Mom, I had read this book to my children so often that it seemed familiar, but my daughters couldn't quite place it. As they paged through, the first daughter got to her favorite page and read it with the same inflection I always used. Recognition dawned. Her sister turned the page to her favorite scene and repeated the action - read (sounding just like the me of two decades ago), recognition, sparkling eyes. 25 years and the memory was still waiting in that book for them to find.
Make a memory today with your children and Miss Mopp. You'll be glad you did.
