For blast-furnace air-pumps, one of the most approved arrange ments is, to place the pump vertically above the cylinder, with a piston-rod common to both, and the crank-shaf t below them. For working large reciprocating water-pumps, vertical-engines are equally advantageous, and the Author believes they may in future be used more frequently than in the past, for driving pumps direct beneath them; but for such duties there are many practical reasons, which make indirect action through the medium of a beam, specially advantageous.
