Joel Chandler Harris was born in Eatonton, Georgia, the illegitimate son of Mary Harris. At 13 Harris became an apprentice printer on "The Countryman," a plantation newspaper edited and published by Joseph Addison Turner, a highly literate planter, lawyer, and writer.
