Historians of the twentieth century have approached the nature of southern sectionalism and the development of the southern mind in a variety of ways. In The Mind of the Old South, Clement Eaton traces the development of the southern mind through fifteen representative individuals whose ideas were influential between 1820 and 1860. Some of these individuals include James Hammond of South Carolina (a conservative), Maunsel White (a New Orleans merchant), Hinton Rowan Helper (spokesman for the non-slaveholding class), and William Yancey of Alabama (the southern voice of emotion).
Eaton asserts that regionalism rests on geographic and economic realities and to some degree history, but it is also based on little things?the nuances of civilization. He points to some of these realities and nuances characteristic of the South. The aristocracy of the South is one of the distinctive features of the region. The Old South was a region devoted to tradition. The southern commitment to agriculture caused the South to exhibit homogeneity. Other salient features of the South on the eve of the Civil War include an exaggerated sense of honor, a profound religious orthodoxy, a strong local attachment supported by a strong feeling for family, an extreme conservatism, an intolerant spirit in regard to discussion of certain sensitive subjects (such as slavery), and race feeling. In summary, when assessing southern sectionalism, Eaton utilizes the ideas of fifteen representative individuals and draws together common themes from each of them.
