This publication, based on systematic research and analysis, is presented in two main parts: a systematic review of existing literature on migrant trafficking in Europe and three case studies on trafficking and people smuggling concerning Hungary, Poland and Ukraine. Part 1 includes discussion of the concepts of "trafficking" and "smuggling", the availability of data on the scale of trafficking, trafficking routes, characteristics of trafficked migrants and how trafficking is organized. The three case studies in Part II are based on extensive interviews with migrants and representatives of the main national agencies for combating migrant trafficking and people smuggling.
