A different twist to the Little Mermaid story, follows more along the H.C. Andersen fairy tale. Overall a good book in a good series.

Interesting twists, but lackluster overall
Maybe I'm just waiting for someone to hew more closely to the Andersen original, instead of less so. And I suppose that Disney has had quite a large affect on all subsequent versions published after the film premiered: authors seem to think they need to come up with something even more spectacular, more unusual. But they still stick to the same motifs and themes set out by imagineers in the late 90s, interpreting the original tale in the same pattern the film sets out. No one seems to remember, for example, that the sea witch is not actually an evil character, but more of a fairy grandmother type. She initiates the young mermaids through a rite of passage, and the youngest chooses to go further than her sisters. That being said, Viguie has some very lovely new twists on the story. Pearl's length of time on land is vastly expanded, with other mer-folk filling in some of the little mermaid's more traditional experiences. She also throws in some twists in regard to the love story and accompanying tests faced by the maiden and her prince. And these play very well in the story she's created. But overall, the book is not well written. A few chapters in, I started muttering about poor editing. Sentences and word structure were stilted or unclear. Not everywhere, but often enough to be irritating--like your school bus seat mate who just won't stop poking you in the arm at random and unexpected intervals. It feels like a first novel getting passed around among the author's writing club friends and critics, a not-for-sale early proof. The bone structure is good, but the flesh is a bit pallid.
