The two sets of Impromptus and other short lyrical pieces included here are a natural byway for Endres, especially after interpreting Schubert's late sonatas, since they relate to them in their formal structures and moods, and the Impromptus, D. 935 might easily be construed as a sonata in its four-movement scheme, similar to the Wanderer Fantasy in that it lacks a designation as a sonata. Even so, the poignant tone of the first group of Impromptus, D. 899 is also comparable to much of Schubert's music from his last year, and the mix of melancholy, passion, and lyrical purity should be familiar to anyone versed in the final sonatas.
