In the course of the 20th century, western-Asian love relationships will be transformed in various media varieties and cultures. The cultural 'other' is being produced as a discursive object, and it circulates in a global-media context. The study shows how modern cultures and discourses are intertwined and how stereotypes shape the mutual reference. The discourse-theoretical and comparative media analysis also unfolds the intermedial aesthetics between literature, musical theater and film by artists such as Giacomo Puccini, Fritz Lang, Franz Lehar, Francois Truffaut, Alain Resnais, David Kronenberg and others in a critically reflective way. The (de-) construction of the butterfly myth culminates in its postcolonial, even transcultural, transformation beyond European opera stages, such as in the Japanese 'Butterflys' by Mori Ogai and Saegusa Shigeaki or the subordinate GI brides of Korean cinema. Die Studie zeigt auf, wie die modernen Kulturen und Diskurse miteinander verflochten sind und wie Stereotype die wechselseitige Bezugnahme pragen.
