The two such assembled works on this Evidence recording are referred to as the Messe de Barcelone (Barcelone-Bbc, ms. 971) and the Messe d'Apt (Apt-trésor, ms. 16bis), indicating the cities where the manuscripts reside, though both seem to have been used by the Avignon papacy at the dawn of the 14th century. Most of the movements are anonymous, except for pieces by Philippe de Vitry and Johannes Tapissier, who are well-documented composers; the names Sortes and Depansis are also given, though nothing is known about them.
