It was first performed in the church of St. Mark in Milan a year after Manzoni s death, on 22 May 1874, with Verdi at the podium. This is a work of great spiritual beauty and power by a very doubtful believer, as Verdi s wife, Giuseppina Strepponi, dubbed him. Its success with audiences and the press was immediate and early in the twentieth century Bernard Shaw predicted that none of Verdi s operas would prove as enduring as the Requiem. To this day, the work is widely and often performed and continues to move audiences worldwide."
