Mostly written in 1826, early in what many believe to be the beginning of his mature period, the String Quintet No. 1 in A major, Op. 18, was taken up shortly after the composer finished his Octet, Op. 20, but was left unpublished until 1832. Following the death of Mendelssohn's friend and dedicatee of the Octet, Eduard Rietz, Mendelssohn discarded the original second movement Minuet and replaced it with the published Intermezzo...
