Previously, McCreesh has interpreted Berlioz's Grand Messe des Morts, Howell's Requiem, and the music of Gabrieli in A New Venetian Coronation 1595, and this recording of Elijah is a continuation of his project to put these masterworks in a historical context, not merely to imitate the instrumentation and techniques of the past. In this instance, McCreesh follows his research into the August 1846 performance of Elijah in Birmingham Town Hall, as well as what is known of the April 1847 performance in London's Exeter Hall, employing a large orchestra and a massive choir of approximately 300 voices.
